5 Redken Looks That Have Us Hyped for Summer

There’s a reason why we love the Redken brand so much, and it’s not just because we utilize them in our student salon*. We love the creative, free spirited designs that Redken features on their IG account, and we can’t help but swoon over these 5 summer styles.

This chic style will pull your hair up and away from your face, so you can maintain that sunkissed glow.

These light waves are perfect for a day at the beach or a trip to the mall. Can we also just admire this perfect blend?

Topsy Turvy Fishtail Braid

This punk-rock look is an easy way to pull back second day hair without compromising style.

Detailed Side Pony

A a bit of oomph to your side body with a fun wrap-around twist.

Curls

Natural curls are all the rage. Don’t worry about styling your hair when you can let yours be free. Embrace your twirly hair!

Instagram Tips for the Modern Beauty Guru

Are you an aspiring or professional beauty guru? Whether you specialize in hair, makeup, lashes, or skincare, Instagram should be your go-to place for self-promotion. IG offers you the chance to put your work out there instantly, literally placing your work into the hands of your potential clients. If you want to tap into this social media craze, here are 5 tips to take your IG to the next level.

Consistency is Key

One of the most used study techniques in schools across the globe are flash cards. Students write them out and go over them again and again. A similar idea should be used on your social media. Be consistent. Repeat your info over and over again. Use your business name in your handle, make sure your name is in your bio. If you work at a salon or are at a school, use that name in there, too!

Ensure that your profile picture is recognizable and high quality. Pick a color palette to use in all of your posts. Are you all about creating neon unicorn hair? Post all of those! Are you more of a pastel color stylist? Post those instead! The more alike your posts look, the more recognizable you are across IG. Not only does this make your information easily seen and accessed, but it also makes you easier to find.

Interact With Your Audience

Got comments? Make sure to answer them. Respond to praise in the comments section with just a simple, “thank you!”, and answer any questions asked about your work/schedule/etc. You should also be hyper-aware of your direct messages. Potential clients may be contacting you for an appointment or for a question. The more responsive you are, the better your reputation.

Follow Your Peers and Idols

See what everyone else is doing. This industry is competitive, but you should be encouraging those around you. We’re all in this together. Not only can you support fellow stylists, makeup artists, or estheticians, but you can also see what they’re doing. Maybe you’ve never thought of trying a new technique, and someone inspires you through their posts.

Interact with those around you! Networking is another huge element of becoming successful. The more people you know, the broader your audience and reach. You never know who’s going to become a referral!

On that note. . .

Share Your Goals

Repost hair/makeup/style goals. Repost your favorite looks from others. Ask questions, experiment, and learn. As a beauty pro, you have to be on the cutting edge, and this is a great way to keep up with the industry! Following and sharing work from fellow beauty mavens is a great way to create relationships and set personal goals.

Use Calls to Action

A call to action is a phrase used in your post to encourage your viewers to do something. Try phrases like, “Tag a friend who’d love this look!”, “Book your appointment for a new color now!”, “Like to see more of this style!”. These type of posts encourage people to interact with you if they like what you’re doing. Be aware: not every post has to have a sales pitch like “book now!”. A post can simply ask for tags or likes!

5 Easy Ways to Save on Prom

Prom is one of the most memorable times of your high school career. You should go all out! You should do your best to make this night one for the books, but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank. We’ve got 5 easy ways to save on prom!

1. Rent a Dress

Rent your dress instead of buying it. Look at dress rental stores in Arizona like Rent the Runway and The Cinderella Affair. Cinderella provides seniors and juniors in the Chandler area with free formal wear for prom. Other ways to save include: wearing shoes you already have, picking up discount costume jewelry or borrowing from friends, and using the clutch you bought for last years big dance.

2. Use Coupons

Coupons sound cheesy, but if you want to go out and do a fun day activity, you can plan and pay ahead of time with coupons. Use sites like Groupon to find entertainment for you and your date. They have discounts on activities like bowling, museum visits, an archery lessons. You can even find deals on restaurants!

3. Go In With Friends

Consider going with a group of friends. The more the merrier, and the more you save! If you can all pitch in on dinner or your activity, it might make the night a bit cheaper for all of you.

4. Cook for Yourself

This tip can easily cover your dinner plans and day activity. Pick a recipe on Pinterest, and have fun with your date while you try to make your dinner. Cooking might not be for everyone, but it is a romantic activity that a lot of people would be surprised to learn that they enjoy!

5. Get Your Hair and Makeup Done at a School*

At The Studio Academy of Beauty, we offer several services that are offered at other salons without the salon price! Going to a school is considerably cheaper than going to a salon. Makeup application, blowouts, and hairstyles; you can get them all done here. Getting your hair, makeup, and nails at a school can not only save you some cash, but you’ll be happy to know that you’re helping a student learn their craft!

Salon Feature: Rolfs Salon

The Studio Academy of Beauty is a proud supporter of our local community. We often host career fairs and presentations featuring the salons in the area. We like to see our students thriving in their hometowns. This month, we wanted to feature an amazing salon in the valley: Rolfs Salon! We had the chance to interview the president of Rolfs about their history, employment requirements, and their stance on education.

tesmer

Here is what President Francis Tesmer had to say about the salon’s history:

“We are the number one brand in Arizona. We have been here for about 30 years. We have four locations and one distribution center. We are known for our top education, certification, and glamour! We are in the top five salons in the valley.”

We asked her about Rolfs’ take on education in the beauty industry, and the importance they think getting an education holds.

“Rolfs is known for their education. Education and knowledge drives us. Without a good education, you won’t go anywhere, especially in this industry! Going to a great school and getting a licence is the first step to a career.”

“You have to graduate advanced classes in order to be successful in a salon. Here are the steps you should take: have passion, learn the craft, specialize in the craft, train, and continue to learn. Take this seriously.”

Francis went on to tell us about the right way to become a great hairdresser, makeup artist, or any other beauty professional.

“Hairdressing is not a job, it’s a career. You should get into this business if you have the passion, and the drive to do anything it takes to be great at what you do. Salons are a team atmosphere. You all work on the betterment of yourselves so you can better the salon so you can better the industry. You have to push to be good at learning, branding, and customer service. Here at Rolfs, our hairdressers believe that their customers come first. They are always learning the newest styles and techniques in order to be ahead of their clients, not behind.”

rolfs salon

Next, we asked Francis to talk about the requirements needed to work at Rolfs.

“During the interview process, we look at them as a person. How committed are you to having a long-time career? Do you love the industry? Are you a caring and empowering person? Are you a people person? Are you hardworking and ready to continue learning? Are you loyal? How long are you going to stay here? Those are the qualities we look for. Someone who is ready to dedicate their time and life to being amazing.”

“When we bring in new salon employees, we train them depending on their skills in advanced classes. These classes are made up of technique classes, but also business, customer service, consultation, and everything else they need to be great here. When they are out on the floor, they will come in once a month for more training. That is how dedicated to education we are. That is how much we value it. We spend massive amounts of time and money on bettering our employees.”

“As a salon, we don’t only encourage working on technical skills, but we also foster personal development. We look at each employee holistically. We teach health skills, finance skills, business skills, and techniques. We want them to be totally successful. If they are happy and healthy, our salon will be happy and healthy. In this industry, you have to want to better yourself so you can better the entirety of beauty.”

We admire Rolfs’ heavy focus on education and betterment in their salons. We asked Francis to share the ultimate goal that Rofls is heading toward.

“Our wish is this: when a girl or boy goes to their parents and says, “I want to be a hairdresser. I want to take my love for beauty and turn it into a successful career.” That their parents respond with: “You are going to be so successful! You are going to travel and make money and better the lives of people around you! We are so excited.” We want everyone in this industry to work toward the same goal.”

“One of the most rewarding things to hear from our employees is the success stories that defy what most people think about hairdressing. I had an employee come to me and say, “I have been here for three years, and look what I have done.” She had bought herself a brand new car. She can afford it. That brought tears to my eyes. If someone has the passion, skills, and the right attitude for customer service, they can do anything.”

We want to thank Rolfs Salon for taking them time to interview with us, but also thank them for the time they have spent here doing presentations. We have enjoyed getting to know them. If you’re interested in getting a cosmetology education in preparation for a great career like one at Rolfs, contact us or check out our program page for more information.

Everything You Need to Know About Transferring Beauty Schools

In light of Regency Beauty Institute closing, The Studio Academy of Beauty wants to offer our support and understanding to their students. We know that the stress placed upon them is enormous. We hope that our information will alleviate some of that stress, and allow previous Regency students to make an informed decision on their next step.

Not the end of your beauty education.

We offer a teach-out program that accepts all hours earned elsewhere. It also waives registration fees and reduces tuition rates. We accept all hours from Regency Beauty Institute.

What do I need to do to transfer?

All you have to do is come into one of our schools and talk with an admissions rep. Bring in your proof of citizenship and your high school diploma or GED.

How can I schedule a tour?

Call us or request information on our website.

What about my kit and tools?

If you were a Regency student, you do not need to purchase new equipment. We will evaluate what you have and determine what can be used.

What happens to my financial aid?

Go into your FAFSA records and put in our school code (041529). One of our admissions reps will help you go over everything when you come in.

How long do I have to wait to start school again?

Come in and visit us and we will discuss your situation. We can get you started back on your path to graduation, licensure, and a great job in the industry.

Why did this happen?

Really, it’s the same reason any other business closes: they lost money, or they didn’t comply with applicable regulations. The industry as a whole is still in great shape, and this closure should not be indicative of the state of beauty education in general.

Is you school at risk for closure?

We are not at risk of closure. The Studio Academy of Beauty is a well-run, compliant, long-standing business.

Is the beauty industry okay or is this a sign of a struggle?

The beauty industry is great! Our placement office has more jobs that students to fill them!

Who do I contact for more information?

For more information on transfers, financial aid, or The Studio Academy of Beauty in general, contact us via phone or our website.

We are here to try and make a transfer as seamless as possible.
