Cosmetology School Myths and Misconceptions

Cosmetology-School-Myths-and-Misconceptions

We’ve been teaching in the beauty industry for over 10 years and we’ve seen a lot of change in that time. Countless trends and fads have come and gone, but for some reason the same myths and misconceptions seem to hang around. We’d hate for someone to give up on their dreams because of something that isn’t even true. Here is the truth about five of the most common myths and misconceptions about cosmetology school.

Myth #1: It’s Too Expensive

The truth: Everyone’s financial situation is different. A program that is affordable for one person may be far too expensive for the next. When compared to a four-year degree, cosmetology school is much less expensive. In addition, many schools offer scholarships, or financial aid. We do for those who qualify.* If neither of these are available, many schools offer payment plans, or a work-study program. Make sure that you check with the financial aid department at your school for information on what they can do to assist you.

Myth #2: It’s Just for Women

The truth: Careers in the beauty industry are for everyone! All types of people can now work as makeup artists and hairstylists and enjoy great success. Stereotypes like this one still exist, of course, but that hasn’t stopped more and more people from exploring careers in the field.

Myth #3: You Have to Be Good at Beauty Already

The truth: All you need is an interest in beauty and a willingness to learn. Many people seem to think that beauty skills are required to even attend a beauty school. This, however, is simply not the truth. The whole point of beauty school is to study the skills that you’ll need to be successful in your field.

Some people who go to beauty school have spent years practicing hair, makeup, or nails, so they may be a little ahead of you if you haven’t. The good news is that you always put in the time to become good at beauty, too! All that you need going into beauty school is creativity, a love for the beauty industry, and the dedication to learn all new skills and techniques.

Myth #4: You Don’t Have to Go to School to Work in the Industry

The truth: Licensing requirements continually change over time and graduating from a school is always helpful. In the past, it may have been easy to find a job in the beauty industry without a beauty education. Today, you need to be licensed for almost every job in the beauty industry. Even if licensing isn’t required for a specific job, there’s still a lot of stiff competition for jobs in the field of cosmetology and lacking an education will make it almost impossible to get a job over someone who has attended an accredited beauty school. If you want to work in the beauty industry, do yourself a favor and go to cosmetology school.

Myth #5: It’s Just for the Young

The truth: Most beauty schools happily accept all students regardless of their age. In fact, according to recent statistics, more and more older adults are showing interest in beauty careers. Older stylists can be just as successful as their younger counterparts because they are able to bring their life experiences with them into their beauty career.

Now that you know the REAL truth, there’s no better time to take the next step. Forget about silly cosmetology school myths and misconceptions and follow in the footsteps of successful beauty school graduates. The industry is growing and wonderful opportunities could await you!
