If you’re a beauty lover like us, it’s probably important to you that you’re taking proper care of your hair. A lot of work is required to make sure your locks stay shiny and healthy, especially when living in a hot, dry climate like Phoenix. Feeling a little overwhelmed on how to get started? We’ve got you covered with our list of hair care tips specifically for our desert climate in Arizona!

Limit Sun Exposure

Getting outside with the sun out is a great feeling but you don’t want your hair to have those rays on them for too long. Just like with your skin, overexposure to the sun can cause a lot of unwanted hair problems. If your hair is exposed to the sun’s UV rays for too long, it can create issues like discoloration, dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning, and frizziness.

Don’t worry because there’s a super simple solution for anyone who doesn’t want to be cooped up for our long summer seasons: wear a hat! This will give you that much-needed protection from the sun and as a bonus, offers you the chance to complete your outfit with a style that fits you. Don’t forget to also spray some sunscreen on your scalp. It’ll give you an extra layer of protection or prevent your scalp from burning if you choose not to wear a hat.

Condition, Condition, Condition

Arizona is an extremely dry climate, which means that you’ve got to help your hair get as much moisture as you can to make it up. One of the best ways to do this is by using a deep moisturizing conditioner. Unlike shampoo which can strip away your hair’s natural oils if used too much, conditioner will help keep your hair moisturized and prevent frizzy or brittle strands. As we start to get into the hotter months of the year, try substituting your shampoo with conditioner more often.

Want to learn how to deep condition your hair? We lay it all out for you:

  • Use a little shampoo in your hair first to get it clean.
  • Apply the conditioner on your ends and work your way to the roots.
  • Leave the conditioner in for around 30 minutes. This could change depending on your hair type.
  • Rinse off the conditioner with cold water.

Invest in a Humidifier

The biggest takeaway from these tips should be to get as much moisture into your hair as is possible! Your hair is going to lose a lot of it during the summer months, which is why a humidifier can be really worthwhile. Plus, not only will this help your hair stay moisturized but your skin as well.

Avoid Heat-Styling Treatments

We know that this one is a little harder to follow. There are going to be days when you want to curl your hair and that’s totally okay! Just make sure that you’re limiting heat-styling treatments as much as you can. If you usually blow dry your hair after a shower, try to instead give yourself more time so you can let your hair air dry. Trust us, your hair is getting enough heat exposure and will thank you for this break!

This tip also applies to your shower temperature. A hot shower may feel great at the moment but over time it can do real damage to your hair by stripping away some essential oils. Start working on getting comfortable with warm or lukewarm water.

Get Regular Trims

Too much heat exposure causes your ends to split and get brittle. If you don’t want those split ends to start moving towards your scalp, the best thing you can do is schedule regular hair trims. Keep your hair healthy by trimming off the ends at least every six weeks. This is our favorite tip because who doesn’t love doing something that feels great and is good for you?
