Beauty school isn’t for the weak, and beauty school students can make a huge difference in the world, just like other working professionals do. Despite common misconceptions about the field, the beauty industry is incredibly important because cosmetologists, hair stylists, nail technicians, and other professionals make people feel good about themselves.
We’ve all heard people say condescending and incorrect things about beauty school graduates, so we wanted to talk to you about some misconceptions in the field. And, of course, to set the record straight, we want to debunk these myths, too. In this blog, we’re going to go over five beauty school myths, then we’ll tell you why they’re wrong. Myth #1: Beauty School Is Easy and Anyone Can Do It
Now, to be clear, this myth is pretty easy to debunk because we all know that there are some people out there who just can’t apply makeup or do hair! We’re not saying this to be rude, but you’re sure to have many family members and friends who would admit that they can’t apply makeup themselves. And even if they won’t admit it, give them a mascara wand or hair scissors and see what happens!
All jokes aside, beauty school is not easy, and, no, not everyone can do it. Once you’re enrolled in cosmetology school, you’ll realize how rigorous the curriculum truly is. The reality is that there are industry standards that people in the field must follow, so it is the job of a cosmetology school to set students up to learn all these standards. It’s hard work to be enrolled in cosmetology school.
Myth #2: Beauty School Graduates Can Only Become Hairstylists or Cosmetologists
If you’re entering cosmetology school, you might hear people assuming that you want to be a hairstylist or a cosmetologist. The truth is, you don’t have to be a hair stylist or a cosmetologist after graduating cosmetology school. Of course, if you want to follow these two career paths, you absolutely can. However, there are so many other paths you can take with a degree in cosmetology.
For example, you could open your own salon, you could be a cosmetology teacher, you could be a social media influencer, or you could be a beauty consultant. And these are only a few of the careers you could pursue, as the options are endless! When it comes down to it: yes, becoming a hairstylist or a cosmetologist is possible with a cosmetology career, but you have so many other options as well!
Myth #3: Beauty School Is Only for High School Dropouts or Those Who Can’t Get into College
Unfortunately, there are so many stigmas against people in beauty school, like the wrongful assumption that beauty school students are high school dropouts who cannot get into college. At cosmetology school, we accept students who do not want to go to traditional college, and, as you might expect, many of our students do attend beauty school because traditional college is not for them. But this does not mean our students cannot get into traditional college.
Our students are incredibly bright, and they are sure to make change in the world. So, it is wrong to assume that cosmetology students are simply students who dropped out of high school. There are so many barriers that come with going to high school and traditional college, such as the price of education and having to leave your family. It’s never a good idea to judge someone based on where they go to college, but one thing’s for sure: beauty school students are very smart and quick learners!
Myth #4: Beauty School Is Expensive and Not Worth the Investment
Just like any other college, you’re going to have to pay for beauty school. When many people hear this, they assume that going to beauty school is a waste of money, that it’s not worth the investment. We’re here to debunk that myth, because beauty school is actually very affordable—especially when compared to four-year college—and the investment is worth it.
Paying for beauty school can be done out of pocket, through scholarships, through financial aid, and through working while going to school. Depending on your financial situation, certain options will work better for you, but know that going to beauty school is worth the costs, because there are many lucrative careers that can come after your schooling. Myth #5: Beauty School Only Teaches Technical Skills, Not Business Skills
It is often said that beauty school is a place where technical skills are learned, not business skills. Despite the fact that technical skills are a big part of our curriculum—how could they not be?—we also pride ourselves in teaching our students business skills, as well.
These days, students need to know about technical skills and business skills, because when beauty school students graduate, they need both skillsets. Graduates from The Studio Academy of Beauty go on to work in studios, and they even go on to own their own studios. Jobs like these require business skills, so we prepare our students by teaching them business skills. A core part of our curriculum includes information about both business and marketing.
